“Sunrise Cave”, Acrylic Ink and Oil on Canvas, 2023, 48” x 36”

While I was making this I was thinking a lot about the Amygdala and its role in the way we experience emotion. The amygdala, an almond-shaped cluster of nuclei located deep within the temporal lobe, is crucial in processing emotions such as fear, anxiety, and pleasure.

I think of this as being the brain from the amygdala’s perspective. From deep within the physical structure of our brain, this little bulb is so crucial to bringing joy and pain to our experience of the world, but at the same time cannot experience anything like those things for itself. It is simply a processor. One that tells us we are safe inside our cave, far from predators, and tells us how beautiful the sunrise is from within our safety.

Also available as a limited edition Giclée print as well. 22” x 17”. Each print is signed, numbered and matted.
